I am now on to making the first head from the mold, it is going to be made from Silicone and I am going to have it a dark color to match that of a gorilla’s skin. The way this part is done is firstly spraying the mold with a mold removal spray to help get the head out when it’s done. Then you start adding the silicone in layer’s on Silicone bit by bit. The first layer is meant to be thin and is meant to be able to cover most of mold. Once it is a bit drier but not completely you can start to focus on other parts of the mold and build the thickness up. While doing this you need to try and make sure the eyes are clear, you do not always get all of it off, but it helps with the next step. Once you have done one or two layer’s you can then add in the eyes. I made some new black resin eye’s because I wanted to see what they would look like in the end, but they can be swapped out for different ones later when the head is done. Once the silicone was dry, I removed any traces of silicone over the eyes with a scalpel and tweezers. Then I made a small batch of silicone and mixed in a silicone thickener that makes the silicone mixture more like something like cookie dough. This then helps the eye’s stay in place by putting a little bit of it in the middle of where eye is on the mold, and then pressing into it with the eye. Then you form the mixture around the eye like a parcel. I have 10 eyes with different sizes, so this takes a little while but not too long. Then It is just about filing out any parts that are lacking silicone, you manly know if your good if you cannot see the mold through the silicone. I also tried to make sure the ears where thick and solid with silicone so that it helps with remove the head out from the mold later. The last step is adding scrim all around while the Silicone is still sticky and can bound to the scrim. What this is for is for the next step which is the foam, because foam and silicone do not stick together. So, the scrim acts as a way for the two to bound together. The Foam was a fairly quick process it is a 1 to 2 ratio, which means what ever of B you add you do double of A when mixing them together, which is very important for it to work. Once mixed it start reacting extremely fast and begins expanding out. For this hole process it is necessary to ware a filtered mask gloves and to be in a extractor room, as I’m told when mixing the chemical’s together it can be a Farley nasty substances that you shouldn’t get on your skin and can produce harmful themes when expanding. The way I was told to do it was in stages, layer by layer making sure it get’s into all the nocks and crannies. Another thing I was told to do to make it better was to place a board with a hole in the middle and place it on top with something to weigh it down, when your adding the final layer. What this does is put pressure on the foam when it expands, allowing for a more stable and condensed structure. The hole acts as a way for some of that pressure to escape, other ways it could damage the cast and mold itself. Know I have just got to wait for it to rest for a bit and then I’ll begin getting it out of the mold
